Did God Make a Mistake?

Why did God destroy so many
people at the Great Flood?

And why was He disappointed
that He made people in the first place?

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man ... . And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.” Gen. 6:1-7

We read that humans had become very wicked after their Creation. God had made them perfect and had planned for them to live in safety, happiness and health forever, but sin came and changed everything. In place of God's plan of health, safety and happiness for everyone came sadness, fear, anger, pain, sickness, and death.

God was not happy, He “repented”, because sin was really hurting His children. All humans are God's children, and He felt extremely bad because now there was almost ZERO good on the earth.  This wickedness was not just hurting, but killing, ALL His kids. He needed to put a stop to it or there would be no one left. The Devil had caused so much evil that if God had not stopped things by sending a flood humans would have totally destroyed, not just themselves, but the earth too.

The Bible tells us that the results (the “wages” ) of sin is death (Romans 6:23), but that God's ways bring eternal life. God did not want those who were living before the Flood to die, but they would have died anyway if He had not stepped in.  Protection from the Flood was offered to everyone.  In fact, Noah preached for 120 years warning people of what was coming, but few listened.  (Genesis 6 & 7 tells most of the story.)  So when God did step in by sending the Flood He was actually protecting those who were trusting in Him.

To save the righteous from the self-destruction that was inevitable God asked Noah to build a boat that was large enough to house many people, plus the animals. (If everyone had listened and gotten on the boat God would not have needed to send the Flood.)  God tried to save many people, but in the end only 8 listened.

This was Plan “B” for God, not Plan “A” . This story shows that God will destroy some of His own kids if it means that the ones who listen to Him and trust Him would otherwise be harmed.

The Lord protects all those who love him,
but he destroys the wicked.

Psalm 145:20 (nlt)

Our God is a GOOD and AWESOME God, all of the time! We can trust Him!

But as the days of Noah were,
so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:37 (kjv)
